I’m fully grasping at the last dregs of summer and resisting the transition to Halloween season (which is honestly not hard to do with 100-degree days on the forecast here in LA). June was so gloomy, I feel like summer only started in July and I’m need my three months worth — my mental health depends on it!
All that to say, this is an August Roundup, not a Summer Roundup.
what i didn’t buy in august
The bulk of this newsletter is going to focus on What I Didn’t Buy. If I keep something on my wishlist but don’t pull the trigger, I get to put it here — this is my new reward system.
These will all be secondhand items that have been gnawing at me, calling to me, rattling up in my empty brain — mostly in my size (16-18, mid-size, plus-size, whatever) and mostly made of natural materials — but items I haven’t purchased due to budget, thinking it may not have a place in my wardrobe, the measurements are a little off, etc.
I can change my mind on these, but at least I’ve given them adequate thought and patience!
Poshmark
I have been craving a Miaou corset top for years - I once bought one from The Real Real, but it was too big and I returned it. This one is black and white so it would go with everything ($80) (though I’m also perusing these two (1) (2) from The Real Real.)
ThredUp
Here’s everything I have favorited at the moment and some stand-outs:
This Botkier black leather bag with zipper detailing (only $29.75 during the Labor Day sale)
This 100% cotton Old Navy polka dot top for only $11.69 during the Labor Day sale.
This perfect When Harry Met Sally style sweater that is 90% merino wool and 10% cashmere. Only $54.59 during the Labor Day sale.
Very cool wool Madewell jacket ($44.80 on sale!)
Ebay
This Ganni peplum top is so cute, but I am worried the open front with only bowties is just not a look I can pull off ($110).
TheRealReal
This Staud dress is only $33 and 100% cotton! But that back cut-out…
Two turtlenecks for Fall: First is La Ligne, has amazing details, is cropped and 100% Merino Wool ($99). Second is Totême and a mix of cotton and wool ($187.50) - very classic.
Are you kidding me with this Sézane coat ($328)? So cute, but I have so many coats and nowhere to wear them. If this drops down below $150, I can’t be held responsible for my actions.
what i did buy in august
After over a year of searching, I located this Big Bud Press shirt Jessica Williams wore on Shrinking! I previously bought it in pink instead of blue after many months of searching but color theory is real and it makes me look horrible, so I kept looking for the blue. Hoping it fits even though it’s a medium.
what i read
The Big Door Prize - M.O. Walsh
Little Secrets - Jennifer Hillier
Funny Story - Emily Henry (only one I recommend and I’m not even finished with it yet!)
what I listened to
When The Tortured Poets Department and The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess were battling it out in the charts, I was unwittingly listening to both on repeat so much, sorry I cannot choose one!
what i watched
Narrow Margin (1990)
Gene Hackman has to get his star witness (Anne Archer) from Canada to the US border safely … by TRAIN!!
That’s all for now! Don’t start rewatching Gilmore Girls — it’s not time yet! BYEEEEE!
Is this how we write a comment? Does mine not include this option? I don't know how to Substack. I love the concept of this newsletter especially because I was literally just thinking about how I wished you would do one just so I could look at all your recommendations for everything. I feel I willed this into being.
I love all the items on your wishlist, everyone is getting those tops with the ties that go down the middle. There is no way on god's green earth I could get one of those that would successfully cover my tits. There is just not a way and that is ok. Also, that Sezane coat you listed? Good lord I've been looking for a knit looking jacket like that for 6 months, that one is so fabulous. The one I've been eyeing is on Amazon for like $40. Not nearly as cute as that one though.
Your new big bud press shirt?! Obsessed. I look at their stuff all the time and have never been able to bring myself to buy anything. I started looking on depop to see what they have from them on there. Not too bad actually - someone is currently trying to get me to buy one of their jackets because I put it in my cart. Do you have depop too? What am I saying of course you do.
I'll look into how to get mine to do this comment thing for you I swear.
